If you've ever experienced an achy back, you know how debilitating back pain can be. This class aims to help those who are not in acute pain to gently stretch, as well as perform very gentle strengthening postures to stabilize the back safely. This class will be similar from week to week to give students a chance to really relax into the sequence and allow their backs to fully embrace the gentle movements. This class is not intended to diagnose or treat any condition on its own, but it can be very beneficial for preventing minor back pain when done regularly. Students are always encouraged to listen to their bodies and not do anything that does not feel right within themselves. As always, talk to your doctor if you are unsure if this class is right for you, and feel free to contact me with any questions.

We have a 30-day money-back guarantee as well, so if you aren't sure, you can try HealthGirl.ca out with no risk to you!

Be sure to check out our monthly schedule on our website to see when the next Yin Yoga class is!

Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions you may have, and please talk to your doctor if you have any health concerns that may become exacerbated by physical exercise. I hope you're able to enjoy some nice weather wherever you are - currently here it is warm, breezy, and full of lovely summer scents outside. I'm super excited to be outside BBQ-ing my favourite veggie dishes and Beyond burgers, making my deck my new part-time office, and even sometimes letting my nearly glow-in-the-dark legs get a little bit of sunshine 😉

With vacations now happening, impromptu outdoor gatherings back on the menu, we start to realize one thing hasn't changed - the BUGS! That's why for July the incredible doTERRA essential oil blend, Terrashield, is FREE with your LRP order of 125 PV or more, placed before the 15th of the month! This blend smells just divine - a bit woodsy, a bit floral, and a lot of bug protection - seriously, pair this with the Pilot diffuser (it's portable and rechargeable) when you're outside to really notice a dramatic reduction in nasty bugs. It's my go-to now, every time I'm on my deck and the mosquitoes start to decide I'm a tasty buffet. With lovely aromatic and effective essential oils like ylang ylang, cedarwood, arborvitae and lemon eucalyptus in a base of fractionated coconut oil (that prevents irritation!), Terrashield also comes in a super-convenient spray to easily apply as an instant personal repellant, definitely check it out!

Terrashield oil is great when added to a candle - just add a couple of drops for the scent to lightly permeate your space with its uplifting aroma. You can also add it to diffuser jewellery, or directly to your skin for a gentle personal aroma.

Canada Collection

Also noteworthy is the new Canada Collection - a beautifully gift-boxed set of 3 essential oils that are all sourced in Canada. Satya is the second of the Yamas, mentioned in many ancient Sanskrit texts, many dating before the Medieval period. The Yamas are known as the "restraints", or things you should or shouldn't do to be able to avoid internal and external disharmony.

Many cultures, religions, belief systems, even more general morals and ethics have guidelines on truthfulness, and often encourage us to tell the truth. But there is more to this than meets the eye, when we look a little deeper. Satya is often translated to truthfulness in thought, word and deed.

Truthfulness sounds simple - you just don't lie. In reality, it's not always the easiest to implement. If someone puts on a new outfit they love, and asks you if they look good, what do you say? The "nice" thing would be to say, "Yes, of course you look good." But what if they don't? What if you really don't like their outfit, or you think it is not flattering? Do you tell them that? Or do you lie, because obviously they really like the outfit and you don't want to hurt their feelings?

Does This Lighting Make My But Look Big?

Satya tells us to be truthful, and Ahimsa (our first post on the Yamas and Niyamas), tells us to be compassionate. So we should tell them in a compassionate way that perhaps it is not to our taste, but that we are happy they are so happy with their new outfit. Perhaps, we may even find something we DO like about it - how the colour helps their skin glow, or how their smile wearing it makes them seem a hundred feet tall. We can be truthful about our opinions, while also being compassionate of their feelings.

Or perhaps we can go deeper: do you lie to yourself? We all know that yes, we do. In some capacity we have all lied to ourselves. We have told ourselves that we didn't really want that job anyway, after being rejected. Perhaps we've told ourselves that a particular relationship is great when we know it's not. Maybe we've even said that the extra slice (or two!) of cake every day isn't going to hurt (it does, we know it does). Probably the most harmful is when we let ourselves off the hook for doing something we know we should to help ourselves in our lives, saying it will get done "tomorrow"; let's be honest, tomorrow never comes, and it is better to do today than put off to tomorrow. Yet, we tell ourselves this, and so much more, perhaps even on a daily basis.

Twisting Around, Praying the Lies Don't Bite Me

The effect? Lying to ourselves limits our productivity, our potential, and reduces our self-esteem and confidence. It minimizes ourselves and our lives immeasurably. Our subconscious is always the witness to our thoughts and actions and when we lie it knows. We are constantly hurting ourselves by being untruthful, constantly holding ourselves back from our greatest and most fulfilled life.

How do we stop?

We need to get still, even in the midst of situations, and listen to that still, small voice that tells us whether we are being truthful or not. And we need to follow it.

Yes, we must be compassionate. But we must also be truthful. This is how we can build trust with others, but more importantly, within our own selves. Truthfulness in our thoughts, words and deeds helps us build consistency, and integrity.

Satya - to thine own self be true!

In honesty,

HealthGirl
HealthGirlhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15870433650683970107noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-97888786236062088.post-53311897997717677682021-06-30T01:30:00.004-04:002021-06-30T01:30:00.214-04:00Wellness Wednesday: How and Why to Use Wild Orange Essential Oil

I'm not going to lie, Wild Orange CPTG essential oil from doTERRA is one of my favourite essential oils, and not just because it smells like summer sunshine in a bottle.

Wild orange has so many incredible uses, both for your physical and mental wellness; it can uplift your mood when you're feeling down, it can help digestion when you're feeling bloated, it adds amazing bright flavours to food and it can also make some amazing DIY cleaners for your home. This is caused by the high levels of mood-boosting monoterpenes that naturally occur in the rinds of the orange, which this fragrant essential oil is made from. You can also blend this oil with others (see the images below) to create different scent profiles to enhance mood even further - you can create a moodscape to help you feel happy, warm and collected, whenever you need! What are your favourite blends to use? What would you like to try?

Another great way I love to use Wild Orange essential oil is in my water. Always remember that doTERRA essential oils are pure and very strong, so only a drop is needed to flavour your food or water! Also remember that not all essential oil brands are created equal - doTERRA Wild Orange essential oil is safe and even recommended for internal usage, but other companies are not safe. Additionally, only use essential oils in glass or stainless steel drinking containers, never plastic. Oils can leach into the plastic, and we shouldn't really be using plastic anyway.

I love adding a drop each of Wild Orange, Grapefruit and Lemon essential oils to my 1 litre glass jar and sipping from it throughout the day (refilling it as needed of course!). It keeps me hydrated, tastes delicious, and helps with digestion, preventing bloating and indigestion. Have you ever tried it in your water?

Another tip to try, is to add a drop or two of Wild Orange essential oil to your food! Try adding it to smoothies, iced teas, freezer pops (it tastes like a creamsicle!!), shortbread, and so many other recipes where a bright addition of citrus is welcomed. Again, just a drop or two is usually all that is needed to give a lovely flavour. This oil is also Kosher certified!

Have you ever tried cleaning with your essential oils? You can try adding 10 drops to a cleaning solution of water and vinegar in a spray bottle to clean surfaces (check that vinegar is ok for your selected surface before using, and test on a small area to be sure it's ok), or, my personal favourite, adding a few drops to a vacuum filter to invite the cheery aroma into your home as you clean! The active ingredient in citrus oils like Wild Orange is Limonene. It is incredibly effective at cutting grease and cleaning surfaces - plus it smells great.

So what do you think? Muscles generally take 30-60 seconds to stretch, and can stretch both statically (staying still) and dynamically (with gentle movement), but tissues like fascia, tendons and ligaments require longer, usually a minimum of 3 minutes, and are much safer when stretched statically (when still or with very slow, minor adjustments). Yin also has fantastic meditative and restorative qualities. When holding gentle stretches for longer, your mind and body are gently encouraged to relax. Many people find that they sleep much better after doing a Yin Yoga class. Students are always encouraged to listen to their bodies and only go to where they feel gentle sensations, NOT pain, when stretching, and to breathe. Self- adjustment as the pose time lengthens is always encouraged to make sure the student feels safe and is not stretching beyond their comfortable limits. These classes will use similar postures from week to week, but in different configurations to ensure the students get the most from their classes.

We have a 30-day money-back guarantee as well, so if you aren't sure, you can try HealthGirl.ca out with no risk to you!

Be sure to check out our monthly schedule on our website to see when the next Yin Yoga class is!

<span face=""arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif">Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions you may have, and please talk to your doctor if you have any health concerns that may become exacerbated by physical exercise. Created as a science of living well, it is often confused as being a religion (again, it is a science to live well, not a religion) and thus, we lose sight of all of the amazing mental benefits that it has, and focus purely on the physical.

Doing this, we can look at yoga as a balanced meal - if we take care to eat a plate with a balance of nutrients, we will see the best benefits from our nutrition for our overall health. Similarly, if we take care to look deeper into the concepts of yoga, we practice not just postures (asana, which translates to "comfortable seat"), but also breath work (pranayama), meditation (pratyahara, dharana, dhyana), but also the moral concepts known as the Yamas (restraints) and Niyamas (observances). In this way, we aren't just always getting the "dessert" of a physical yoga practice, but also the "(plant-based!) meat and potatoes", as it were, of a balanced physical, mental and emotional practice.

These concepts of Yamas and Niyamas are really quite simple, and break down to playing well with others, and taking care of yourself.

Let's explore the first of these concepts, the Yama of Ahimsa, or compassion, today!

Ahimsa translates roughly from Sanskrit into compassion or active non-violence, but in reality there is so much more depth to this when we really dive deeper into its meaning for ourselves and for others.

When looking at the history of Ahimsa, some of the earliest mentions of it are found in ancient texts thousands of years old, though the most prevalent and descriptive writings seem to come from about 8-6 centuries BCE, and forward. Further, we can see this as utilized in not just yoga, but also Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, Sikhism, and when looked at in other spiritual and religious contexts, also Christianity ("Thou shalt not kill", for example), Judaism, and even in the Hippocratic oath ("Do no harm", as another example).

It is one of the most basic concepts that we as humans should adhere to for peace and a thriving society - to be kind to others. But ahimsa is not just being kind - it is an active non-violence, to ensure that all beings are treated as sacred, worthy of respect, and to achieve this by looking at it in words, deeds, and thoughts.

The fundamental idea is that all creatures are equal, as all creatures have a divine spark within them, and are deserving of life, respect and dignity. This is incredibly profound, as we begin to see that causing injury to another in actuality also causes injury to ourselves, as we, too, have that divine spark within us. By harming a forest, we deplete its ability to provide us with oxygen. So, to, do we harm our own life force when we harm another, whether it be physically, mentally, financially, etc.. We send out that negativity into the universe, which will invariably come back to us at some point. Often this is seen as Karma, though Karma is not a sort of "gotcha" reaction, but a realisation that every action has a reaction, and that positivity generally begets positivity, and negativity generally begets negativity.

How, then, do we practice ahimsa? By starting within. Understanding that as humans, we are inherently fallible and that we will make mistakes. By understanding this, we can be more kind to ourselves when we trip up, and instead of berating ourselves, use these roadblocks to learn and improve ourselves. When we forget an appointment with a good friend, instead of saying, "Oh I'm such an idiot, I always do stupid things like this, my friend is going to hate me now. I'm such a bad person..." etc., etc., we can look at it instead like this: "I can't believe I forgot our appointment! I have had a lot going on and I was very tired and stressed out which caused me to forget. I also didn't put a reminder in my phone and daily agenda so that I would be forced to remember. Next time I will take steps to make sure I remember. I will say I'm very sorry to my friend, without making excuses, and ask forgiveness."

Can you see how much more productive, positive and compassionate this second way of thinking is? How it will help you to rectify the challenge, instead of beating yourself up about it, causing stress, and not really discovering the root of the issue and trying to fix it?

Another example - someone badmouths you to another person, starting rumours that are hurtful to you. Do you retaliate in kind, causing injury to them in turn? Or can you perhaps take a step back and look at it from a higher perspective: This really hurts me. I should tell them how hurtful it is when they say untruths about me. Perhaps this is because they are actually hurting inside themselves. Perhaps I should reach out and see if they are ok.

Now, look, I'm not saying this will be applicable in everyday life - internet trolls, for example, deserve none of your attention, but the idea is that we need to understand that we are all unique individuals, trying to do the best we can with what we have. Others are living a life that you really know nothing about and are dealing with challenges that we may never understand fully. These people may be acting out of pain and fear, and may not really know deep down the hurt they are causing others in the process. We may be able to de-escalate situations by having empathy and compassion and trying to see the other side.

The key is to understand that every living thing on this planet is living in a story you will never completely understand. Every person, animal, living thing sees the world through its own lens, and while we may not agree with how they perceive and live in the world, they are entitled to dignity and respect, just as you are.

Treat others as you wish to be treated, and advocate for others when they cannot advocate for themselves. Treat yourself as you would treat others. This is a great class for those with limited mobility, or who are just returning to exercise after surgery (always with a doctor's permission, of course). For those who can stand for short periods, we will do short stretches with the support of the chair. All students are always encouraged to listen to their bodies and only go as far as is comfortable.

Those with artificial joints or achy backs may find this especially beneficial.

These classes will follow a similar sequence from week to week for students to see their progress as time goes on.

As always, ask your doctor if you are unsure whether you are ready for an exercise program or not.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have. For many it conjures images of a bubble bath in a giant, swimmin-pool-sized bathtubs with rose petals, some model-esque woman eating chocolate cake and drinking wine while burning a million candles and listening to music (or secretly binge-watching mindless TV!).

It isn't that. Or at least, it doesn't have to be that.

Self-care is more like maintaining your wellbeing. Kind of like how you put gas in your car, check your tires and oil regularly, sometimes give it a car wash, and once in a while clean out the crumbs from the seats. It isn't always sexy, or easy, or even something you always WANT to do. But you need to, or your car won't look, smell, or run properly when you need it to.

The same is true of self care. We need to take care of ourselves so that we can also operate at our full efficiency, have the energy we used to have, be free from anxiety, have good digestion, look the way we want, and be able to BE THERE for our family, friends, and of course, our jobs.

So, with that in mind, here is the first of the 5 Pillars of Self Care to help make sure you can build your resiliency, handle stress with ease, avoid illness, have the energy you've always wanted, and generally live your best life.

Pillar 1: Nutrition

Your nutrition needs to be on point as it is the foundation for all of your body systems to have the energy and health to survive and thrive. Did you notice I didn't say diet?? Because diets imply deprivation, and those diets don't work.

However, you do need to make sure that you are eating in proper portions, and with proper nutrients. In my courses we will dive deeper in to the nitty gritty, but for now, try to follow this "rule of thumb" - literally (this is a general guide for adults, not intended to be medical advice);

- A palm is a single serving of protein for women, 2 palms for men. You need this 2-3 times per day, depending on your size and activity levels. Try to eat more plant-based proteins. they are filling, healthy, full of flavour, affordable, and don't cause inflammation as much as animal proteins.

- A single cupped hand is a serving of cooked grains. At most, 2-3 of these per day, again depending on activity level, overall fitness and wellness goals, and current muscle vs. fat mass.

- A double cupped hand (both hands cupped as if you were scooping water) is a serving of raw veggies. A single cupped hand is a serving of cooked veggies. Aim for 6-10 servings of veggies per day, again depending on your current circumstances. Fresh is always best, but frozen is also good. Canned (without added sugar or salt) is often an affordable third choice. Organic is great when affordable and available, but let's be honest, it's not always a possibility for everyone.

- Fats should follow the idea of the end of your index finger with solid fats, end of your baby finger for liquid fats. Peanut butter is the end of your thumb. Cheese is your last two joints on your thumb.

Generally, avoid milk products as they cause inflammation, and are not the best way to make strong bones, despite all of the advertising. Dairy, particularly cheese, is addictive (literally!), so limit it as much as possible if you can't get rid of it entirely.

Avoid sugary, processed foods. They're devoid of nutrients, can be addictive and can cause cravings. making it harder in the short and long term to stick to your healthy eating plan.

A simple way to load your plate? First, use an 8", or 20cm diameter plate. Not all plates are the same size, and a larger plate will cause overeating.1/4 protein, 1/3 (MAX) grains, the remainder of your plate should be veggies. Fruits can be no more than 1/4 of the plate, but fruits tend to have a lot of sugar and sugar causes inflammation.

Bottom line: inflammation is bad. Inflammation can cause digestive upset, bloating, and even feelings of anxiety!

And I don't know about you, but anxious is the opposite of how I want to feel when I'm trying to take care of myself!

Eat at regular intervals, making sure that you are never ravenous, but rather feeling slight hunger so that you aren't eating from boredom.

Eat a variety of foods that you enjoy, again in healthy quantities, and play with different flavours - you can add lots of different spices and herbs without adding fat or unhealthy calories!

Try a new recipe once per month to discover new cuisines, flavours, ingredients so that you are never bored.

And yes, I hear you - I know you're busy and it can feel much easier to stop in a drive through on the way home from work instead of making food at home. I personally love two (well, three, actually) strategies that I employ weekly to save time, money and stress (and dishes!): Meal Prep, Batch Cooking, and Grocery List Planning.

Meal prep. Okay, okay, i'm not talking Pinterest-worthy meal prep here. I'm talking about deciding what I want to make and how to make it. Here's what I do: I live in the country and I'm very, very busy so I only do groceries once per week. Everything has to be planned in advance because I don't want to have to repeatedly drive all the way to the grocery store (if the closest one doesn't have what I need, I may have to drive 30-60 minutes one way to the next one!).

Breakfast: I make the same breakfasts every day for hubby and I - a protein shake that is easy to make in just a few minutes.

Lunch: Hubby does intermittent fasting so he doesn't eat lunch, but I usually decide on one simple lunch that I will eat or the week.

Dinner: I then decide on 3-4 dinners per week. I plan to make enough so that we have leftovers for at least 2 dinners. The containers are oven, microwave and freezer safe so they're SUPER convenient. I used plastic for a long time but they really don't stand up to long term use. However, I know with kids glass isn't always the best choice.
